Great! Does that mean basically any auto shop would be tooled for this too? (Or are spark plug helicoils unsuitable because they're not as many threads?)

If the co-ops are too far, just try any other shop. Most do coil inserts on a routine basis. the only guy I know there is Black Mountain, but here's a link to a shop list, and you can hunt out one nearer to you. BTW- as a rule you're more likely to get help vs attitude from a blue collar shop focused on repairs and servicing commutyers than a high volume or high end store.
LOL BMC is who I called, they're the closest shop now that I moved to north county. I will be down near my old haunts tomorrow night though, I will give my favorite bike shop a try, Ye Olde Bicycle Shoppe. I love those guys, I always come out of there with more stuff than I thought, or a lower price than I thought, or both. They sell used/vintage mostly, also some trendy fixies for the ever-abundant hipsters. They are who chased the threads for me before (for free!) and they didn't suggest helicoil, and they seem small and quaint, so I kind of thought they wouldn't have the tools. But of course it can't hurt to try, especially since I'll be there anyways to get a cheap shorter stem from their many buckets of lovely used parts.
