Bikes: Trek 2100

Cracked chainstay trying to remove pedal. Yes you read that right. Advice please

So I bought a 2005 Trek 2100 off Craigslist last week and over the weekend I put around 50 miles on it. I bought some pedals to put on it since I didn't have the right shoes for the shimano clipless pedals it came with. The right hand side came off easy enough but the left hand side seemed stuck. I applied pressure with a 15" cheater bar and heard a super loud pop. Couldn't figure out what broke until I flipped it over and it looks like I managed to break crack the chainstay. I was applying a good amount of pressure by hand but I can't believe it would crack like this. I scrounged up pretty much all my cash to buy this bike and now it looks like I am stuck without a bike again. Can this be fixed? Welded perhaps? What options do I have at this point? Thanks for reading.

Also want to mention in addition to the crack, the paint on either side of the chainstay is now cracked and flaked due to the pressure I assume.
