When to unclip on the roads

I'm a new road cyclist. I am riding a lot on public roads and neighborhoods and really enjoying it. When I approach an intersection, stop sign, or traffic signal, should I be unclipping in preparation every time? Or rolling up to the intersection before deciding on a course of action? It hasn't happened yet, but I fear I will roll up to an intersection clipped in and be forced to suddenly stop, requiring me to rapidly unclip and possibly fall in the process! (And I worry less about my injuries during a fall, but more about creating a traffic hazard) Any tips or experience?
