Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

Yes, cassette position with respect to the face of the locknut (inside of the dropout) varies hub to hub, and among mixed cassettes (brand, or # of gears). If you have access to shim stock in assorted thicknesses, you can make thin spacers to put behind cassettes, bringing the outer sprockets to an exact distance from the dropout, therey eliminating any fine tuning on wheel changes.

I've done this to team racing wheels for almost 40 years (going back to F/W days) so the entire team could work with a single pool of wheels without any tuning. I also measured all chains to accommodate the widest gearing to avoid any nasty surprises when wheels and cassettes were switched on the fly.
