Uh, when I'm suffering up a grade, trying to talk myself into maintaining a cadence instead of bailing out, I could give a rat's petoot about how smooth the transition is between the 15 and 17 tooth cogs. At my weight and current fitness level, I'd rather be able to complete the ride. Maybe when I get in better shape and can push a 23 or 25 tooth cog up the steep grades will I start weighing superior transitions between cogs more heavily.
But that completely misses my point. If you have a triple you can have both - the nice close ratios, and the big range you need to help you in the hills. That's the whole purpose of a triple.
