Thinking of changing pedals after 25 years

I've been riding Look pedals for a very long time now, first the Deltas, and now the Keos. I've had many different models of both. Today, while I was standing and climbing, my foot slipped out, but I recovered quickly. When I stopped to check it out, of course I found that the cleat had broken at the tip, just like so many others have.

So, I've had it with Look pedals. I'm looking at Speedplays as an alternative, a completely different system without springs. My questions are these: Do the Speedplay cleats last longer than Looks? I see they are twice as expensive at about $40 vs. $20. And even more important, will a 58 year old rider be able to adapt to the different pedal easily? I'm getting too old for club tombay, my bones always break now when I hit pavement. I do a lot of city riding in NYC, almost 90% is in city even when I'm headed out somewhere else. Will I be comfortable with them? I'm leaning towards the Light Actions instead of the Zero as I'm not looking to race, nor am I really that hard core anymore.

Also, do people use these on commuter bikes? I ride to work 2-3 times a week and would think about using them on both, probably the stainless on my road bike, but the CrMo on the commuter. Or maybe I'd give them a try with CrMo to see if I even like the feel on the road bike. Right now, I use platform pedals with loose clips on the commuter. Needing shoes with cleats for commuting may not be the best idea anyway as then I need to have something with me to wear when I get to the office.
