Hi thanks for reply. As I understand the 10 speed stuff is differently spaced to the 8, 9 speed stuff, so was the problem maybe just in the shifter? In my case, I won't be putting any 10 gear stuff. My shifters are not deores, I'll update what they are when i go down to check.

Also, what does it mean 'compact' crank set? Can there be crank sets with same name, but different due to one being g 'compact' and the other not?
