Problem was that they stretched VERY quickly. I think that chain lasted less than 1k miles before it stretched beyond usefulness! Later they came out with chains with beveled sideplates...
Sedis' "Sedisport" line chains from France have the bulges at the plate to catch the cog teeth and I think they held the patent on that design. They were much the rage back in the late 70's and early 80's as THE chain to have if you want fast shifting chains. I'm quite surprised that people don't seem to remember that..... I guess Shimano's Hyperglide drivetrain pretty much overshadowed anything else on the planet after they came out with them....
