The toe clip holds the strap in an open position allowing the shoe to easily slide into the opening while the cleat on the sole of the shoe engages the pedal. The strap is the device that holds the shoe to the pedal.
Wish I still had my Diadora shoes...wooden soles...attach the cleat to the sole with supplied nails...talk about duck foot walking...
