It's hard to knock the Suntour stuff. Value-wise it's probably the best call.

For indexed I'd probably go with Shimano 8 spd bar end shifters and something like a Deore derailleur set. It's all pretty bullet-proof and if the system gets finnicky you can switch to friction mode.
