I also would stay away from that bike shop. As to the problem- Now this is just a guess. It's possible you have a broken axle. The bike could have felt fine as long as the quick release skewer was still in the axle. Upon removing the skewer, the axle separated and shifted making it difficult to slide it back in. Again it's just a guess. Good luck!
