The shop is a business, of course. All Peterson is saying is as a customer, show a little good faith. If you spend 10 minutes picking the shop owner or salesman's brain, buy something. It is good karma. You never know when you will be need his help fixing your bike the day before (or even day of) a multi day tour or charity century ride.
The good news for me is thanks to this forum and the internet, I don't need to spend time hanging around bike shops bending ears. Usually when I go to a LBS, it is with a purpose.
Here is something, a lot of times I've gone in and asking a simple question results in a half hour long BSing. Some shop rats love to talk about their knowledge of assymetrical chain stays BB stiffness , etc, and they love to BS with people who share their passion for the sport. Sometimes when Im in a hurry I have to cut them off.
