There's a cultural context here. Imagine for a moment a world where you can ride your road bike into town, lock it up with a crummy little wire thing, and go have a cup of coffee or beers with friends. Imagine leaving a wallet with $300 in it at a ticket machine and having someone chase you down to return it. Now imagine having your beater commuter stolen and fully expecting it to be returned. It's a beautiful thing, eh?
