The two rides I mentioned went poorly were my first two rides ever. I used Strava on the second one: it was 16.3 miles with 970 ft of climb. It took 1h 44m and I had to stop fairly frequently to rest. I was riding with a buddy that was able to do it easily (he's been riding for some time now), so that's what I'm comparing myself to.
