The Escondido-Del Dios ride went thru RSF then San Marcos on RSF then thru Elfin on Elfin Forest then north to Deer Springs Rd and then wandered around the area east of Escondido where I got lost and tried a lot of weird little roads while searching for a way down to Bear Valley Rd and/or San Pasquel Parkway.

Google Earth says 58 miles and 4500' for the planned route and my GPS showed 39 miles and 3200' - as I said I got lost several times and my firm rule when doing those kind of exploratory rides is to never look at a map or GPS - just ask other riders or keep following my nose.

I get to see lots of interesting new places that way.

My kmz file shows:
the climb from I-15/Bear Valley Rd and up over Del Dios and then down below the dam to be +250' and -600'
then down to the river valley below Olivenhain drops to sea level
climbing from there up to RSF/Elfin Forest Rd is +750' with a lot of ups and downs
dropping back down on Elfin Forest Rd is -300'
climbing back up to Spring Valley Rd at I-15 is + 800' with several ups and downs

it does add up if you wander around a bit and that is what makes it such a great place to ride - just a few small detours can completely change the nature of the ride
