Sounds like some good advice from everyone. I don't anything specific to add since I haven't ridden longer than 21mi yet (hope too soon though!), but I did want to comment on the below:

I read recently, I think in Bicycling mag that eating an apple before a ride (while a good idea) should be done like 30min beforehand, due to the composition of its carb contents and how it takes some effort initially to digest. They said that the required digestive effort can cause an upset stomach if you don't give it some time in your stomach before a hard ride. I understand that a banana should be a pretty sure thing as far as instant fuel without needing a break for digestion, though.
