He's a Short-eared Owl, and if you're astute you may find it unusual to see a picture of a wild owl in flight, and you would be correct. Owls are usually nocturnal, but this guy likes to get an early start and will often emerge to start hunting in the late afternoon or dusk. Took me a year and a half of trying to get a good shot of him, because even at dusk the light is inadequate for most camera systems.
