I used Alivio for 3 years of all-weather commuting. If you pack them with grease they are a strong, reliable hub, just not as well sealed or as light.
Any of the steel axle Shimano hubs will do the job. The newer aluminium axle hubs have smaller ball bearings. I suspect that the freehub shell is thinner because of the number of recent failures reported but need some firm evidence.
