Odd freehub/cassette lockring question
The lockring on the freehub cassette on a cheap 7 speed wheel has teeth on the outside, rather than on the inside. All the lockrings I have seen have teeth on the inside. What gives? It is a shimano set of 7 cogs, and they are loose cogs, not attached to each other, but separated by loose spacers. I cheated and knocked it loose with a screwdriver. I know. Bad approach and risky. I cannot seem to find a tool for properly removing and reinstalling a lockring with teeth on the outside. Does such a thing exist? And why the non-standard lockring on shimano cogs? The hub is a crappy Chosen (Chinese) hub on an inexpensive hybrid. Also, I cannot remove the cup and cone axle from the drive side without first removing the freehub body. Is that unusual? The freehub body prevents me from getting the cone wrench down to the cone so I can hold it while removing the lock nut. Is it commonly necessary to remove the freehub body to remove a cup and cone axle? My life has included cartridge bearing ups to this point.
