Exactly. While the plan might be somewhat safe in a rural town, you are just asking for trouble in a larger city. Frankly, I would not get any sleep at all worrying if I were to be robbed or worse. And what would you do with your bike? So what if you heard someone taking it. So you are going to confront them in the middle of the night not knowing if they are armed or if their buddies are around? Maybe stash it somewhere? If you are smart enough to find a good hiding place then there is always someone else that is smart enough to find it to.
I say if you can't afford a secure place to stay for the night then think of somewhere else to stay other than a city.
