If you have a knowledgeable friend, he's (she's) your best bet. He can look at the whole problem, figure out what's needed, and advise accordingly. More important, he can teach you some basic bike repair, especially including how to fix a flat on the road, since this is a real possibility for everybody.

BTW- cograts on both the weight loss, and the ability to call your 10mile commute a short ride at your current weight. You weight is added strain on the bike, but not unreasonably so.
