My current set up does not seem to work in friction mode either. Does this make sense. I can only cover 8 gears with the pull range that it has.
As noted you DO NOT need a 9-speed cassette, only a "9-speed era" or earlier rear derailleur.
And, yes, there is indeed a shifter that will work with your current rear derailleur, but it's a Dyna-Sys compatible MTB shifter.
