9s spacing is narrower than 8s, so the derailleur won't index correctly. There are workarounds such as using a Travel agent or J-tek converter, but this isn't my favorite solution.
If your cassette is fairly worn, you might simply buy a new cassette and chain and go 9s since there isn't that much difference in overall cassette width.
