Test as follows, shift to the outer ring, then shift the rear to the middle, or a bit beyond, which may cause rubbing. Use the trim click and if it doesn't resolve, give the bare wire a solid base viol pluck at the downtube. If that moves the FD father in then your problem is cable friction.

Look for any source of binding, such as hard bends in the housing, dirt under the BB, or housings not lining up well at fittings. If the bike is a bit older, the housing may be starting to extrude through a ferrule, which pinches the end closed a bit.
I tried exactly that, to give the cable a good old tug on the downtube to see if that released it, had dirt issues before on my rear whilst riding and that was the only way I could change gear on a 60 mile ride! that was real fun..... - for the current issue this had no affect. There are no hard bends nice curls, out from the barrel on the frame is also pretty straight then the cables curl. I will have a further "play" today at some point and go through things with a fresh head and not my #### ##### #### from yesterday fecking thing!
