The issue that I have heard about newer XT hubs is that the axle is aluminum and not steel. Older XTs with steel axles are great, whereas some have reported breakage of aluminum axles.
According to another thread currently running in this forum, it's more to do with the pawls in the freehub assembly failing.
But Doug54 and I seem to be getting by quite well with ours...
