Texas is crazy in this respect. Seems like everyone in the state wants to go to UT, so you have to be in the top 8% of your H.S. class to guarantee admission, and that will probably drop to 6% in the next couple years. Outside of that, good luck -- pretty much a lottery. That said, the kids I've hired out of UT have generally been as high caliber employees as our hires out of Stanford, Harvard, CMU, and often even MIT.
