Greengrass- As teenagers we played in school lots a lot. We did riding circles ontop of the basket ball markings. We would slalom through parking spot lines. We would have slow races across the lots. All great practice for balance and control.

By "siding up to cars" if you're referring to riders who weave in and out and between cars, I completely agree - I've seen bikers do that, it's a dangerous practice. That's definitely not me. I need to have a lot of space from cars when I bike and even being well within the bikers lane when cars are in their lane next to me makes me uncomfortable when we reach a red light and are side by side. It's even harder when there is no biker's lane and having to manage a red light/green light stop and re-start. I guess again it's the control issue, not being sure if I'll be able to stop and start and move with absolute precision. Thanks for the suggestions in the school lots, they're very practical and helpful - I'll have to claim a school lot an early morning for the practice sometime.
