Dunno if it's really WORTH anything, as I haven't been tempted to sell mine. Watching eBay, a guy tried to sell one recently for around $750 but didn't even get a bid, even with the boobies behind the bike in his photos. Vitus 979 frameset prices dropped with the Nashbar NOS sales completed a few months ago--lots of larger-size frames with labels and booklets still attached. That's where I got this one, and paid around $275 for it, though they dropped under $200 at the end.
Parted out, the frame might pull in around $150 or so. The full Mavic group does run pretty high: crankset around $150-$200, about $100 for the brakeset, maybe the same for the derailleurs. Depending on the condition, I've seen the Mavic bits run to about $500 or so for a complete set including 630 cranks, NOS will probably push it to around $650 or so. Of course, there's a BUNCH of early-80s SSC out there--which seems to run cheaper, but not as much from the late 80s (with the outlined lettering). I'd imagine you might get $500 or so for one, fully loaded, but you'll have to find someone like me to buy it; eBay will simply suck the wind out of your sails.
I had a full set of Mavic wheels for mine: aero Arayas and a Challenger disc. I sold them recently after considering that I wanted to RIDE the thing rather than just collect stuff. The wheels in the photo are Ukai/Shimano and I have a Velocity Spartacus (silver) set on right now. It's being ridden frequently, though I also have a classic Serotta I'm riding (a 1985 frame with 2005 components).
I built these two bikes for my own enjoyment, not to collect. I always wanted a Vitus when I was racing, and now I have one just like I wanted back then. Ditto with the Serotta, which is just like Davis Phinney's bike back then.
If you're in Atlanta, we should talk. I'm in Tallahassee, and I get up there frequently for things and always need a riding partner. The invitation is of course, extended here. To quote Kevin Costner in
American Flyers, "Bring your bike...and we'll ride around."
