Upgrading cassette on a 1984 Trek 600

Hi,

I recently got into biking and bought a 1985 trek 600 in good condition on CL. Bikes been great so far and I just seemed to finally got the hang of those DT friction shifters! Anyways, the bike is a 14spd and came with a 52/42 crankset on a 12-24 cassette. I live in quite a hilly area and am having difficulty climbing these 10% grade hills even on the lowest 42 x 24 gear. The plan is to eventually work my way up to getting better on these hills on my current gears, but in the mean time I was wondering, can I replace the cassette to something like a 12-32 and keep the rear derailleur and everything else the same? I was thinking something like this:

-Thanks guys!
