Remember to leave room in the budget for other items, good bike lock, pump, basic tools, lights, seat bag, spare tube and helmet.

Not much you can do to test the bike other than ride it around testing shifting and braking. The first time I got on my 7.5 during the test ride, it was an interesting experience as I was unfamiliar with the shifting and went the wrong way.
