I don't know how to boil it down further, but I'll try. Over time, things change, but they change relatively. Be it baseball, cycling, hockey or soccer - the underlying stats for each sport do not see radical improvements year over year. I was merely making an observation about your issue with 'cherry picking' stats. Only significant rule changes in any activity will cause a deviation from the mean.
