Admittedly 10k is a lot of money, but most people can buy a 10k bike if that's their priority. most folks can't have the best car, boat, horse,etc.
For the most part most cyclists can still ride what the pros ride if they want.
It depends on the boat. If it is a yacht racer, it's the owner who bears the cost and maintenance, but s/he can't sail it alone -- a crew is needed, and they basically get to do it for free. I love sailing, but I am never likely to own a boat except maybe a tiny cruiser... I am happy to crew on a race yacht, however, and there are owners happy to have me on board.
