I've never used a chain checking tool, but just checked out Park's tool on their website - it does look really easy to use. Still, since the chain pitch is an even 1/2 inch, using a ruler is really easy too - no math required, just hold it next to the chain. Works best with a quality metal rule, something like an old wooden yardstick wouldn't work well.
