On the opposite side of that the convenience factor weighs in. That is, if it is convenient in the short run, most gravitate towards that option - I included on occasion. I think we here contemplate these things often, especially on this forum, and we see that in the long run the convenient option ends up costing a lot.
I can illustrate this with an example of hiring a lawn service to cut my grass. They do a wonderful job I'm sure (I see them in the neighborhood) and I can do other things while they are working, like hang out at the pool or take a bike ride. However, that $6-800/year that I save by doing it myself is better in the long-run for me. After 30 years of doing this myself I save $18,000 to $24,000 (not including mower gas and equipment) and I'm outside doing active things (I now use a reel mower for most of my cutting - 3 separate lawns).

Any extra time I spend on errands is more than compensated by the fact that I can work one less day a week.because I'm not paying for a car.
