Well, given the additional comments, the fact that there is a lot of play in the posts, and a seat post is only ten bucks (I can move the clamps), I guess I will spring for the posts. If I was keeping the bikes I might try it on one but I don't want to stick anyone with a problem.

My wife and I own 4 TREK bikes that came with the sprung seat posts. Each rather quickly started to swing from side to side when pedaling the bikes. I took one apart to see what caused this side to side play. Found a nylon washer with a key slot that seems to wear rather quickly and the increasing clearance in this key slot allowed the side to side movement. Had at the nut holding the long spring with a socket wrench. When the spring was fully compressed the seat would not sway. But my normal bike now sports the standard no spring seat post.
