Instead of rim strips we use Veloplugs.
For tires we use Maxxis Re-Fuse (folding, 120PSI) . . . two flats in 5,400 miles (and yes, we live in the desert with lotsa debris/cactus thorns).
Our Zona c/f tandem is now 10 years old and weighed in at 26.5 lbs when new. Currently 35,000+ miles on the odo.
Yup, we still ride TWOgether even at ages 80/78.
