Interstate has a very specific meaning in America and I was very confused as to why people were advising the o.p. to get out there on what should be a limited access roadway.
Interstates are open to cycling in much of the United States. Some Interstates have separate facilities, others just allow cyclists on the shoulders, but there shouldn't be anything confusing about cycling on Interstates. (Here in Washington, both I-90 and I-5 are mostly open to cyclists, and very popular cycling routes.)
