Statistics I've read say those who wear helmets get into more crashes than those who don't wear them, so the way I see it, riding lidless decreases my chances of crashing. That's the goal, to not crash. Worst case scenario I think would be to take on the riskier riding behavior enabled by the belief that helmet protection is in place when, because of excessive UV decomposition, old age, mishandling, poor fit, loose straps, attached accessories, manufacturing defects, or unseen damage, the helmet offers waaaay less protection than advertised.
