Efficiency of a mid-drive, "through the gears", motor is dependent on the chosen shift points.
Performance can be greatly increased, and economy-efficiency can be increased ... not necessarily both at the same time.
Power is increased by shifting near 50-60% of top motor rpm, while maximum efficiency is attained by shifting in the 80 - 90% of top motor RPM.
