Harsh riding tandems

There seems to be a general consensus on here that C'Dales give a harsh unforgiving ride, may require suspension seat post etc. The Calfees and Paketas etc are a lot more comfortable etc.
Well I was just wondering how comfortable does a bike need to be?
Myself and stoker have never had an issue with our C'dale. Always thought it was significantly softer than a single bike.
This was confirmed yesterday when riding around an old velodrome doing an FTP test on our single bikes.
It was me and a friend who isn't my usual stoker.
The surface was far from smooth and you really noticed it on the single bike.
After the testing we jumped on the tandem ("harsh C'dale") and straight away we both remarked on how smooth and comfortable it was.
It really was like going from an unforgiving sports car ride to a limo.
