Clipless does mean you have to ride consciously for some time and engage a few neurons as you stop. It is now a habit of mine to unclip as a approach a stop. My biggest challenge is stopping, clipping in, starting up, and finding I'm in too strong a gear to continue. That throws me for a loop every now and then, but it's been years since I've fallen due to clips and that will be the case for you soon. (in a few years...
