old mountain bikes aren't as suited for off-roading as new mountain bikes, but they kick butt as city bikes. On my drop bar conversions with good tires i have no problem keeping up with road bikes on pavement.. and then when we hit dirt/gravel/curbs I just keep going while they dismount
