Check your chain carefully. If a link is whacked and not flexing it can grab a derailleur and rip it apart. If the chain's fine it's possible something was on the road that got tossed up by your front wheel and got caught in the chain, like a branch or piece of metal. Glad you didn't get hurt.
Digibud, I actually had my chain checked about two weeks ago. I'm getting close to replacement time for it but it checked out OK. It's possible that i ran over something but I never saw anything in the road or felt anything with the front wheel. Doesn't mean it couldn't have happened, though, and I hadn't thought of that. Thanks!
