As I read the posted studies, including exerpts quoted by Pallen, it appears that deliberately pulling up in that test situation led to increased power, but also greater "gross inefficiency" as measured by O2 consumption. So yes, it seems proportionately more O2 is consumed for the results you get pulling up. If so, pulling up may give you a temporary edge, but is not a good long-term strategy. Mind you, I only read the abstracts and I am not a sports physiologist.
