Beleive it or not, we are all setting an example when on the road. Especially for young kids and inexperienced cyclists.
I want motorists to notice my actions and think to themselves "well, I guess not all cyclists are dangerous maniacs with a death wish". I see motorists expect the worst behavior from me when I ride by, or approach an intersection. I understand why. That's no big deal, I expect the same from them.
Sure, as cyclists, we can take 'shortcuts' and maybe 'bend' the rules from time to time - that's one of the myriad intangible benefits of being on a bike.
I don't gamble with luck when I'm behind the wheel, nor do I when atop the saddle. It's a fool who tempts fate (or karma, w/e) . I've been safe so far, and I plan on being safe ad infinitum *knocks wood*
