I agree with Ekdog about multimodal vacations. Unfortunately, here in the states it can be hard to take a bike. Some Amtrak trains take them and some don't. "Inquire before traveling," they will tell you. Greyhound required crating and a surcharge, the last time I inquired.
That's what folding bikes are for. That's *exactly* what folding bikes are for.
I just returned from 4 weeks in Europe and took my Brompton on the plane (as checked luggage) with no difficulty and no extra charges. It also rode free on public transport there (as opposed to having to pay an extra $2 bike fee (which would not have been the end of the world, for that matter). I've also taken it (and my other folder) on planes in the US, as well as on megabus, which doesn't officially allow bikes (but they can't tell it is a bike).
