This fitness and low heart rate low bp etc that cyclists enjoy is a double edged sword. I read about some research as to why super fit endurance sport enthusiasts suddenly drop down dead with cardiovascular problems. One thought was that the low heart rate and low diastolic bp actually lets crap happen inside the blood vessels more easily than in less fit people. Oh well...when it's time to go, it's time to go. Over the 3 years since I had my near heart attack, I've seen people right here on BF recount issues with blood clots etc.
After Machka's run-in with DVT, and her subsequent research, we figure there is more to deaths from heart attacks that involve DVT, especially if there is an undiagnosed predisposition caused by a genetic mutation, and extended air travel.
And the heart is a muscle. I figure that if it's overstressed, it will cramp like any other muscle. Paying attention to rehydration, refuelling, electrolytes and exercise intensity are all part of the equation.
But I might also be wrong (have to say that as a layman amongst erstwhile medico types here).
