Multi-modal commuting and touring: that's the way to go!
Multi-modal transit is great but at this moment it seems that bike lanes and paths are growing more than train and bus transit. There are numerous small RV camping resorts with showers, pools, etc, but I see them as being a bit bigger in scale than what is needed for multi-day bike travel. I think the trick to planning a good multi-day or even multi-week bicycle trip would be to balance hours of cycling with hours of recreation, especially when traveling with kids. I've been able to do this pretty well with weekend trips but extending it to multi-destination travel over a period of a week or more would be challenging.
