The problem here in Iberia is that a lot of the camping areas are aimed at RVers and we cyclists are often relegated to areas that are on rock-hard ground and lack shade, tables and other amenities. From what I remember, in the States this is not usually the case. I'd love to be able to go to places that catered specifically to the needs of cyclists.
This is true in Germany as well, where camping is kind of like setting up a vacation dacha in a rustic areas; people even bring mini-lawnmowers to mow the tiny lawn in front of the RV or camper.
On the other hand, youth hostels cater very well to the needs of cyclists, even older ones.
