My son will be a soph at the college located in the town where the US Bicycling Hall of Fame is located and biking is a way of life. Plenty of bikes get stolen. Luckily his clunkers with u-lock has kept the bike in his possession. (He did manage to snap off a dropout on his first bike, a solid set of wheels picked up at the bike auction) He uglified his bike with zebra duct tape and weird stickers.

Inside parking was not an option for him so I got him a big u-lock and told him to always use it, even when he's just gonna be somewhere just for a minute. I also advised him to try to park next to the fanciest bike in the rack.
